From Profumo to Spitzer: Call her Christine Keeler & Kristen Who

45 Years of Sex Scandals and Politics

The political career of New York Governor Eliot Spitzer (D), corruption fighter and one-time scourge of Wall Street, is on life support amid news that he was snared in a prostitution ring. Spitzer apologized to his family and constituents in a hasty news conference but did not answer questions or address his future plans.

The prostitute, identified only as “Kristen” worked for the Emperors Club, which charged between $1,000 and $5,500 an hour and operated in New York; Los Angeles, California; Miami, Florida; London, England; and Paris, France, according to court papers.

The Profumo Affair was a political scandal from 1963 in the United Kingdom that is named after the then-Secretary of State for War, John Profumo. The Profumo Affair developed after Profumo had a brief relationship with a showgirl named Christine Keeler, who was also the mistress of a known Russian spy, and then lied in the House of Commons when he was questioned about it.

The scandal forced Profumo to resign and severely damaged the reputation of Prime Minister Harold Macmillan’s government. Macmillan himself would resign a few months later due to ill-health.
